Let’s be honest. Most of us care about how many followers we have on Twitter. More or less, but we do care.
It’s flattering to know that there are thousands of people who care about your opinion and it feels great when you tweet for help and get it from someone you don’t even know.
And yet it’s not that simple to grow a large following on Twitter. So some people may end up buying fake followers for a quick boost of their social proof.
But buying twitter followers doesn’t make sense since those people don’t listen to you. And in fact most of them are not even “people” – they’re fake accounts.

1. Become a Niche Authority
People choose to follow others who have a clear authority on any given subject. For example, if you think a person is the go-to source for all information pertaining to a certain topic, you will end up following them on Twitter.
Trying to be an authority on a broad subject will not work out as well. So instead of trying to become an authority on a wider topic like ‘online marketing’, choose a more niche topic like ‘Twitter cards’ or ‘Twitter ads’ to prove your expertise in.
Everyone who wants to learn more about your niche topic will turn to you in large numbers.
2. Pay It Forward
Twitter is all about reaching out to people and responding to those who reach out to you.
One sure-shot way of increasing your followers is to ensure that you follow people and companies that retweet you, share comments with you and make your tweets their favorites.
Simply speaking, the more you reach out to people and reciprocate, the more people will pay it forward and do the same for you.
3. Write Quality Content
If your content is great it helps you get more followers in two ways:
1. Great content spreads on Twitter naturally. Meaning you reach lots of people who might get interested in you and become your followers;
2. Great content has impressive numbers of social shares that your readers will see. This works as social proof for you and your readers are more likely to follow you on Twitter when they see that your content spreads well there.
There are plenty of tactics that help you craft a piece of content with a high chance of being viral. Just to name a few:
- Give your readers a piece of content that is either of extreme value, or highly provocative, or amazingly entertaining;
- Learn to craft headlines that people can’t help clicking;
- Place your social sharing buttons in front of the eyes of your readers;
- Fill your articles with “tweetable quotes” usingClickToTweet or TweetDis;
- And of course simply ask everyone to share your piece – this really works!
Practice this stuff and you’ll notice that each new post is getting more and more social shares and your Twitter account is getting more and more followers.
4. Don’t be Afraid to Tweet Often
Many people on Twitter are afraid to repeat themselves and tweet the same message twice. They think that behaviour like that might irritate their followers.
And yet numerous studies have shown that accounts with more than 15,000 tweets have between 100,000 to 1 million Twitter followers! So the more you tweet, the more visible you become and the more followers you get!
5. Make Influential Tweeters Tweet About You
If I were to write Twitter Marketing for Dummies book, I’d start it with that tip:
Other people are more likely to follow you when they see that influential tweeters tweet about you, your products and services.
And luckily there are plenty of tips and strategies that you can use to get authorities to tweet about you. Appearing on the radar of Twitter influencers is not easy, but it is worth the effort you will put in.
One great way of doing this is to retweet the content shared by influencers and letting them know about it using @mention.
6. Promote your Twitter Account Everywhere
Your Twitter handle is your calling card. Ensure that you mention your Twitter handle just about everywhere!
Put it up on your blog, the company website, and in every piece of content you write. Adding your Twitter handle to your business cards and email signature is also a great idea.
If you are on your way to a business conference and intend to use custom printed t-shirts, put your Twitter handle on them too. Your Twitter followers could be anywhere. How will they follow you if they don’t know you exist on Twitter?
