Last weekend, I had the pleasure of meeting five professionals at the 2014 Affiliate Summit East who made six-figure salaries from blogging and affiliate marketing alone. Below, I list several of their tips and thoughts about how they became authority figures and industry leaders in their fields.
Enjoy!
John Chow, John Chow dot Com
- Emphasized exercising good keyword research to win your audience.
- Wrote book and gained credibility
- People now view him as the authority on the topic, where before, no one would even care to contact him for speeches.
- Also encourages bloggers to pay for a customized theme and logo.
- This helps readers identify you as a “brand.”

- Details matter.
- Focusing on quality, not quantity, makes you money in the long run.
- He said that he still makes money off some posts he wrote several years ago.
- The reason for that, he admits, is because he took the time to make the post informative and easily findable in the search engines.

- Provide variety
- If your competition is writing posts, then create videos or infographics to stand out. Or vice versa.
- Use YouTube to find out what your target audience wants to know more about.
- YouTube is the second largest search engine after Google, so use it!
- Also use Twitter Search to find relevant hashtags for what people are talking about in your niche.
- This should help you formulate new post ideas.

- Strategize
- You can write all you want about your passion, but without a strategy, you won’t make any money.
- Said he used to write 3 posts a day for 11 months straight and didn’t even make a dollar.
- Started to write for Search Engine Journaland then got the “bleed off” effect fromSEJ’s credibility to his own blogs.
- He strongly urges new bloggers to write guest posts on credible sites in order to gain a foothold in the industry through the right exposure.
- You can write all you want about your passion, but without a strategy, you won’t make any money.
- Spy on Your Competition
- Mimic what your competitors are doing and what they are not. Copy what they are doing right but also take advantage of what they are not doing.
- Said he used to spy on Forbes – a competitor at the time – and wrote similar articles forEntrepreneur.
- He then approached Forbes a while later and offered to write sponsored posts for them.
- He said credible sources will buy out their competitors’ writers if you are credible and well known enough.
- This is where the “bleed off” effect comes into play, he said.
