Like any business, the customers (in this case, readers) are the backbone of your blog. Without them your blog and content would become irrelevant and any money you were hoping of making, gone.
So how can you continually engage readers and give readers what they want? How do you even find out what they want?
There are plenty of ways to go about this but sometimes the simplest ways are the best.
Here are some ways to find out what readers want:
Survey Them:
Sites such asSurvey Monkey offer free surveys where you can just enter all of the questions you want answered and then submit the code to your blog. You can then tell you readers in every subsequent post you put up with a link back to the survey post.
I also find it is a good idea to put something like this into your sidebar. Even if it’s just an image with something like “Tell me what you want! Complete the Blog survey here!” Most readers don’t like pop-ups and some people purposely disable them so it might be a good idea to forget using pop-ups for this.
Ask Them:
Is there nothing better than a post simply asking readers what they want? Not only is this a great way to get some comments and reader input, it is also a great way to attract new readers. People love getting involved in conversation and this is a great way to encourage this in your readers. Another way you could do this is through a giveaway post. You could make one of the conditions of entry that the reader leaves a comment stating what they like and want to see more of on your blog!
Research Them:
The next best thing is to do your research. What sorts of people are reading your blog? What is their sex, interests and country they live in? What times are users most active on your blog?
All of these things can be determined by some research. Check the stats of your blog and use sites like Google Analytics to check on things like demographics, page views, entry pages and keywords. Try to do this at the end of each month, which in turn will give you some ideas to focus on for the following month.
