How to Create Your Own Blogging Voice

There are millions of blogs in cyberspace and you need to stand above that crowd—somehow. Bloggers try to look and be different with a variety of different widgets and templates but the proof of the pudding is the text you write and the voice you use to do that.
Your blog needs to have a voice all its own. In short, you need to develop your own writing style. Here’s a few tips that will point you in the
right direction.
  1. Decide what kind of voice you want. This is an either/or decision you need to make. If you’re writing a business blog for your company or the firm you work for exclusively, it’s important to understand your audience before you start writing. Tailoring your text’s content for a certain group is a businesses decision and that means you’ll need to learn the lingo and jargon, as well as the specific content needs like statistics, before you start. On the other hand, if you’re writing for a much broader audience, you can fashion a more open-ended approach.
  2. Know what the competition is doing. Say you’ve got a background in journalism. Take a look around in the industry you’ll be blogging for to see if someone’s already got that angle covered. Sarcasm is another good vein to mine provided there’s not too much of a crowd in that arena.
  3. Be flexible. If you’re trying something and it’s not working, you need to try something else. This advice circles back to the first point about deciding what kind of voice you need to adopt to have your blog catch fire. It takes a bit to fashion one of these and then switch gears continually, but in the end you’ll be glad you did when you find something that works.
A conversational tone is one sure bet whether you’re writing for business or pleasure. This is one of the standards you’ll need to work on if you want to get the kind of interaction that builds a loyal readership. Remember, once you get a loyal readership established, one of the worst things you can do is change the voice again. Your readers might stop following altogether when they think someone else has started writing the blog under your name.
Practice makes perfect
Regardless of the technique you decide on, you’ll need to keep at it until your voice springs out to make itself known. In the end, one of the best ways to blog is to be genuine and that just comes from writing daily until your blogs start to sound unique and catchy.
